I know this machine, because I beat it.

I am an artist, a psychotherapist, and a business owner. I have navigated the elite institutions, the DIY spaces, the non-profit structures, and the brutal reality of trying to stay visionary while also staying alive.

We internalize the lie that our weirdness, our cultures, and our communities do not matter—because the system has actively made us feel that way.

I am Edgar Fabián Frías—a multidisciplinary artist, psychotherapist, and brujx based in Los Angeles.

I didn't just stumble into this ecosystem; I fought my way in. I have built a thriving, independent career across three of the most intensely gatekept, rigid, and exploitative fields in the world: contemporary art, clinical psychotherapy, and professional magic.

As a queer, nonbinary child of working-class Mexican immigrants, the system was never designed to let me in. But I learned how to infiltrate it anyway. I figured out the exact strategies required not just to enter these hostile spaces, but to take up room, get funded, and build a life on my own unapologetic terms.

I created Mutant Magic because I wanted to build the exact safehouse I desperately needed when I was an under-resourced outsider trying to figure this all out alone. I have already navigated the labyrinth. I survived the gatekeepers. Now, I am handing you the map.
